I guess at some time in all our lives we have experienced some form of flood damage of varying degrees .. and maybe even more than once.
Whether it is a minor kitchen sink overflow or a serious matter of what is commonly called a ‘natural disaster’ where your property is inundated with rain or flood waters.
Whatever the cause, minor or catastrophic, I have to say that there is more to your problems than what you see on the surface. Sure, you can clearly see that your carpets are wet, and common sense will tell you that the underlay is wet. But, do you stop and think about the floor?
You may think that once you dry the carpet. dry the underlay, all is fine .. yes? But no, it is not fine. In even a minor flooding event your floors will be wet. You may think that by the man coming in with his air blowers and drying the carpet that it will automatically dry the under lay and the floors beneath that. It really is like drying your hair without brushing it up through the air in that the top layers are certainly dry, but underneath is still wet.
There is also a common myth that timber floors will dry by themselves given their composition. That is true to a point. But, not before they have allowed the bacterial mould to form in this nice warm dampness and not before that mould has got into the underlay to commence the process of fabric rot.
But, I have concrete sub-floors I hear you say. When concrete gets wet, it is not only the water sitting on the surface that you should be concerned about. When the majority of moisture is removed from underlay and carpeting, the temperature above the concrete sub floor rises and the moisture naturally exudes out of the concrete into what was a dry underlay and eventually into your carpets.
We can tell you;
- Once subjected to moisture, wet concrete will not dry successfully under carpet unless specifically targeted.
- Timber floors may look dry on the surface - but they are not
- Wet timber floors under warm underlay and/or carpet will generate mould spores.
- Unless dried completely, wet floors will cause your carpets to rot
The simple answer is to get it all sorted at the same time to avoid ongoing issues.
